Origin of Life Community Join ISSOL ISSOL Meeting in 2005

ISSOL's Name

Dear friends and fellow ISSOL members,

At the general business meeting in Beijing last June, the ISSOL Executive Council announced the results of a vote (the result of considered debate) regarding the possibility of a name change for ISSOL. The heart of the discussion centered upon the intrinsic value to our society of embracing the field of astrobiology by including the term “astrobiology” in some form in our name. The decision rested upon several factors:

1) the recognition of the substantial scientific overlap among those studying the origins of life and those devoted to astrobiology;
2) the increased visibility of astrobiology, both in academic circles and among the general public;
3) the fact that many researchers involved in ISSOL also are involved in astrobiology; and
4) the judgment that inclusion of the term “astrobiology” in the ISSOL name would set a precedent of inclusiveness that will benefit our society in the long term.

Multiple suggestions were made for how to change the name, including no change at all. The ISSOL Executive Council felt very strongly that any name change should retain the identity and reflect the heritage of our organization. A decision was made how best to accomplish this goal, which was presented at the general business meeting and is included here.

Please note: The easily recognized ISSOL logo and acronym remains exactly the same, with only a simple addition, in the form of a tag line. This indicates recognition by our society of the role that astrobiology is playing in the origins-of-life field and in the broader international scientific community.

As most of you know, the decision was made at the general business meeting to allow time for discussion of potential concerns of the ISSOL membership regarding the name change. More than nine months have passed, during which there have been intense unofficial discussions among individuals in the society. Due to the dynamics of both our society and the astrobiology community, it is now time to come to a final decision on this matter.

Each member of the Executive Council has spent considerable time on this issue and feels responsible for carrying out the wishes of the ISSOL membership. After much discussion during these last two weeks, the Council voted once again regarding adding the tag line “The International Astrobiology Society” to the ISSOL name. Out of the 17 Council members, 16 ballots were returned, all of which were in favor of the change. As representatives of the society membership we now put forward the tag line as an official addition to the ISSOL name.
